M1: Analyse the structure of a programme broadcast by a chosen radio station

M1: Write about the structure of a Radio Programme on your chosen station. Talk about each part and bring in my own example. Use audio link examples

Capital FM is a music station aimed towards older teens and younger adults of a mainstream audience as they stream trendy music that a mass audience would enjoy. They were founded in 1978 and there are many famous presenters at Capital such as Roman Kemp. Capital follows a particular structure for their shows to maximize success. It begins with an introduction into the segment and will have talk followed by music and adverts and then repeat that cycle. They mainly play trendy music that is popular and viral on the internet as well as new hits. It is an effective structure as it makes the audience retain the content while also staying to listen to the adverts and all of their own content. The fans like to feel involved with the show and will wait and listen for when the call-ins happen. This structure will affect my production because I will ensure it follows a specific structure to ensure it achieves the most amount of listeners. The main genre of music that is played is modern pop, hip-hop and R&B. Capital is a commercial station therefore they generate their revenue through advertisers rather than from the public, which i learnt in Unit 1.

Capital is owned by conglomerate Global Media Company. They earn their money by placing advert breaks into their scheduling.

Capital also have a prize draw, which costs £2 to enter, where the listener has to say the phrase that pays. Capital also hold their own events such as Capital Summer Ball and Jingle Bell Ball, where these events bring singers on to stage to perform for their fans. Capital have presenters such as Amy Vivian, Roman Kemp, Niall Gray, Jimmy Hill and more. Roman is arguably the most famous one as he took part in popular TV series I'm a Celebrity... Get me out of Here! and he has created a documentary which highlights struggles of mental health and suicide especially in males as it is less talked about, which he called Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency.

Capital is a commercial pop music station. Firstly, you can hear their radio jingle "The UK's number one hit music station, cap-i-tal". This is important so the listeners know what radio station they are listening to. The presenters will introduce themselves and a topic. They will then introduce the music artist's song. Afterwards, they may tell us the weather forecast and any major road closures since some listeners might be driving towards the closures. The presenter will talk to the listeners again and they might do company endorsement which was clear while I was listening to the radio with Jimmy Hill presenting as he talked about how we will need coats now since it is getting cooler and Ebay can help you keep warm; the listeners can win a prize of £1000 for Ebay. This another way Capital earns money since Ebay will have asked them to endorse them and paid some money for this. Once again, the Capital jingle plays and adverts start playing. That is the typical structure of Capitals broadcasting.

Capital FM, like most commercial radio stations, mainly focuses on music, enertainment and lifestyle content. The topics discussed include:
- Music: Capital FM plays popular and current hit songs, and their DJ's often discuss new releases, chart positions and music related news
- Entertainment: Covers the latest news such as celebrity gossip, movie and TV show reviews and red carpet events
- Lifestyle: Discusses a variety of topics such as fashion, food and travel and offer advice to listeners.
- Pop culture: Capital FM covers the latest trends in pop culture including the latest TV shows, movies and video games.
- Community events: Cover local events such as festivals and charity events to encourage listeners to involve themselves
- Current events: Capital might cover news and current event but would most likely be a smaller section of the programming

Capital follows a particular structure for their shows to maximize success. It begins with an introduction into the segment and will have talk followed by music and adverts and then repeat that cycle. They mainly play trendy music that is popular and viral on the inernet as well as new hits.

Capital created meaning through their jingles and background music. The jingles are used to be recognisable and iconic to also help enforce brand identity. The use of recognisable sounds such as jingles were first created on radio in 1926 originally for commercial use and have since been used as almost an incidental sound.
